This year's Eurovison song contest was held in Istanbul on the 15th of May and 36 countries from various cultures and religions
contested for the Grand Prix united "under the same sky" - theme of this year's Eurovison contest; the winner was UKRAINE with 'Wild Dances'.
The stage's design evoked images of Turkey's world-famous architectural monuments such as the Haya Sofya and the Blue Mosque
in Istanbul. This year's contest rules have slightly changed. The contest had two nights: a qualifying round and a grand final.
14 countries were guaranteed in the Grand Final :Turkey, EBU Members from France, Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany, and EBU Members
from the nine highest-scoring countries from the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest such as Belgium. All other participating countries, up to
a maximum of 26 countries, on a first come first served basis, participated in the qualifying round for a place in the Grand Final.
The ten countries with the highest scores in the Qualifying Round (12 May 2004) participated in the Grand Final which took place
on Saturday, 15 May 2004 at 9 pm (local time).
From April until June 2004, you were able to
LISTEN ONLINE to All these Eurovision 2004 songs right here on Star Radio; we played one of the Eurovision songs each 25 minutes or so.
UKRAINE: Winner of Eurovision 2004
Once more, Eurovision's voting was completely ridiculous: neighboring countries voting to each other, political or commercial issues affecting votes...
how about considering art, voice and creation as criteria for voting.
Nevermind, Ukraine won with the song 'Wild Dances'; the song is good and their show is nice too... but there were far more talented artists performing in the contest !
See you next year in Ukraine !
Who is winning this year ?
It's always an unexpected song who wins the Eurovision song contest ? Who is it going to be this year ? Will we remember the winner after the contest ?
I've been watching the Eurovison all my life and I always wondered: " what does it bring to the artists to win the Eurovision Contest ?". We can remember Abba, Céline Dion, Johnny Logan and maybe one or two singers but what about the others !? Some made it, on an international level, without winning such as Lara Fabian (after struggelling some years) and some ... never made it.
What I like most is the show, the laughs that we can have ... and the votings! Yes, the votings are the most ridiculous part of the show ! Why ? because in the end we wonder if it's a song competition or ... a political competition. Every year, the Eurovision seems to be supporting : the countries that we like, that we are neighbours with, that we have political issues with and surely this year it will be supporting new countries who have joined Europe. I'm dreaming of a Eurovision that gives the twelve points for the real good song (depending of the meaning of a" real good song"!) and the nul points for the "real waste of time" songs!
Eventhough I watch it every year because after all it's fun !
Star Radio has presented a biography of all the participants and played all the songs (e.g. the good ones) for you to be acquainted with them and make the right choice.
There are great songs that are competing this year and the show should be of quality. Let's hope that all artist will perform as well as their studio recording !
We all remember the null points for the UK last year where the studio recording was good !
As we are getting closer to the competition, let us give you our point of view.
From the qualifying round, we would like to see the following countries make it to the finals:
GREECE Shake It/ Sakis Rouvas
ISRAEL Le'ha'amin/ David D'or
CROATIA Dajes Mi Krila/ Ivan Mikulic
SERBIA-MONTENEGRO Lane Moje/ Zeljko Joksimovic
UKRAINE Wild Dances/ Ruslana Lyzhicko
DENMARK Sig det' logn/ Tomas Thordarson
CYPRUS Stronger Every Minute/ Lisa Andreas
FYR MACEDONIA Angel Si Ti/ Tose Proeski
FINLAND Takes 2 to Tango/ Jari Sillanpaa
In the final round we would hope, that one of the songs will be the winner and definetly in the top 10
GREECE Shake It/ Sakis Rouvas (top 10)
ISRAEL Le'ha'amin/ David D'or (top 10)
CROATIA Dajes Mi Krila/ Ivan Mikulic (top 10)

ICELAND Heaven /Jon Josep Snjaebjornsson (possible top 10)
SWEDEN Det Gor Ont/ Lena Philipsson (possible winner - eventhough it's a typical Abba song!)

Here is a summary of the predictions that are made on the possible winner of this years' Eurovision song contest:
1st Sweden
2nd Belgium
3rd Ukraine
4th Serbia-Montenegro
5th Greece
6th Russia
The big losers this year are predicted to be (remember last year Belgium was between the losers and ended up being 2nd !):

Xandee / 1 Life (Dirk Paelinck / Marc Paelinck)
Sandy Boets(25) made her first steps into her music career at 6 years old by participating in playback contests. In 1993 she imitated
Whitney Houston in the Soundmixshow. At the age of 9 she got to know Sergio Quisquater (Belgium's representative at the Eurovision Song
Contest in 2002). At first it wasn't the aim to start singing together. When they did, it was for fun, but that ended out that good that
they decided to release their first single together. Sandy and Sergio started to sing together as Taste of Joy, but then a Canadian band
with the same name turned out to exist. When they scored their first hit in Europe, Sandy and Sergio were asked to change their name:
Taste of Joy became Touch of Joy. IIn January 2002, Sandy started a solo career, beside Touch Of Joy, and released the singles 'Alone' and
'One reason'. In the meanwhile, also Sergio tried it solo which resulted in representing Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest in Riga with
Sister. Therefor Touch of Joy was paused for a while but the duo came back in the summer of 2003 with another hit single, called 'Be ready'.
Sandy became Xandee and jumped into the studios with songwriter/producer Marc Paelinck to record '1 Life'. This song was sent in for
Eurosong 2004 in Flanders, Belgium. On 10th December 2003, Xandee got to know she made it to the final 28 candidates. On 18th January 2004,
she won the first semi final of Eurosong 2004 with the maximum of the points and also in the final on 15th February, she ran away with the victory.
Thus, Xandee will represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest on 15th May in Istanbul.

TURKEY
Athena / For real (Gökhan & Hakan Özoguz)
Starting point of ATHENA might be traced back to 1987 when the Özoguz brothers, Hakan and Gökhan, became passionately fond of making music
with a makeshift cumbus (metal bodied mandolin) they made out of a wooden crate. Both brothers are musicians and singers.
Their debut album, One Last Breath , was released in 1993 and continued their trash sound. The summer of 1994 turned out to be a turning point
for the group, during which many new doors opened to them, they played in several bars and concerts. In 1995, an interesting adventure centering
around a bar called Captain Hook began for ATHENA , which is just a memory now but still considered a very special period for its patrons.
Such new songs as “Holigan”, “Skalonga” and “Devam Boþver”, to be included in their next album, were performed for the first time before the
Captain Hook patrons. They began to record their album, entitled Holigan , in 1997, but no local record company was interested in releasing
it because it was an unusual style for the Turkish record buying public. Finally a new company named NR1, determined to take a chance on
alternative projects, released Holigan as its first music production. This album was released in Spring 1998 and unveiled at the Captain Hook.
Video clip for one of the singles released from it, “ Tarlaya Ektim Soðan ”, was shot in the Captain Hook too at a Saturday night during a live
performance, and managed to capture its ambiance in full. Contrary to the theories made up by certain record companies, ATHENA 's ska sound and
songs were welcomed by the local record-buying public so much so that the title song of the album was adapted and sung as a march by football
supporters of all ages at stadiums. Shortly after releasing the Holigan album in 1999, ATHENA took a large-scale tour in Turkey. As of 2001,
Athena toured around Europe and the US, the group also went through several changes. 2003 was a particularly busy year for ATHENA, they had a
large tour for the Her Þey Yolunda (Everything's All Right) album and as a sideline they perform other people's songs at separate shows under
their “cover project” concept. Then “Mor ve Ötesi” started an anti-war movement against the Iraqi war which disturbed most of the world in early
2003; ATHENA contributed to the movement with a song specially written for it, entitled “Savaþa Hiç Gerek Yok” (No Need To the WAR), and performed
with many other musicians as part of the movement.
ATHENA has been chosen to represent Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest. After the election ATHENA performed two concerts in Holland.
One was in Roterdam Night Town, the other one was in Amsterdam Club Paradiso. They also appealed to the Dutch press.

LATVIA
Fomins & Kleins / Dziesma par laimi (Tomass Kleins/ Guntars Racs)
The group Fomins & Kleins founded at the end of 2002, is composed of Ivo Fomins and Tomass Kleins whoa are already accomplished and recognized
rock musicians. Both are from the western Latvian port city of Liepaja, which is famous for its rock music traditions and many famous Latvian
rock musicians have come from there.
Both have worked together previously, in Soviet times forming the underground group “Saldas sejas” (Sweet Faces), which also featured well known
Latvian musicians Zigfrids Muktupavels and Guntars Racs – with whom a creative relationship continues to this day, since Racs himself is the
author of the lyrics to all of Fomins & Kleins’ songs. Singer Ivo Fomins, also educated as a chef, has taken part in many musical projects in
Latvia, performing together with “Liepajas Brali” (Brothers of Liepaja) and as a solo artist, performing in Russia, Poland, Austria, Denmark
and elsewhere in the world, including the “Big Apple” festival in the United States.
The group’s guitarist, as well as the author of all the group’s music, is the very experienced musician Tomass Kleins. In his time, he has formed
many groups and has played in the famous group “Neptuns” (Neptune), led by “Zodiaks” (Zodiac) producer and composer Janis Lusens. By playing in
the most famous Latvian rock band “Livi”, Tomass gained great experience and recognition. The musician grew up in a traditional gypsy family,
where singing and musicianship is already in the blood. While studying the guitar, Tomass learned much from AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne
and Pink Floyd.
At the end of 2002, the group signed a contract with the largest local record company “Mikrofona Ieraksti” (Microphone Records), which is the
representative of EMI in the Baltic States and whose artists include Prata Vetra/Brainstorm, Raimonds Pauls, and many others.
At the start of 2003, the first song that they recorded together, “Sniegs” (Snow), brought the group success at radio stations, as well as
winning 3rd place at the LNT Music Video Competition. The next single ‘Solijums” (Promise) is often played on many Latvian radio stations,
and the song’s video is frequently shown on television and was nominated for the Best Music Video Award at the Latvian Music Awards.
The group’s debut album “Muzikants” (Musician) was released in 2003, and the album’s title track becomes a huge hit after the duo successfully
performs at the Latvian National Eurovision Competition and gains a convincing second place. That year that was the only song to be performed
in Latvian and the public was on its feet during that song. In 2004, after the release of the group’s second album, “Dzimis Latvija” (Born in
Latvia), Fomins and Kleins are once again among the ten finalists who are competing for the opportunity to participate in the European Eurovision
finals. “Dziesma par laimi” (Song of Happiness) was the only song performed in Latvian.

Julie & Ludwig / On again...off again (Gerard James Borg / Philip Vella)
Julie Zahra (22) & Ludwig Galea (26) are on of the most loved duo is the matlesian island. Julie is the youngest in the family. In the year 2003

certificates. All this was the beginning of a prosperous career.
At present Julie is mostly occupied with the participation in various festivals. Her passion however remains musical theater, which marked the
start of her career and prompts her to teach voice training at the Masquerade Theater School. Obtaining experience from the best directors
(Anthony Bezzina, Alison McKenna, Ray Mangion, Hector Bruno, Johanna Casabene, etc.) in Malta helped her to become one of the best musical
female singers on the island.
Ludwig has a younger sister Abigail of whom he is very fond. In the year 2000 he obtained a B.Ed. (Hons.) Degree in Education from the University
in Malta and is currently teaching P.S.D. at Paola Primary School and San Gwann Primary B. However, music has always been the center of Ludwig's
life. Being brought up in a musical environment, it is of no wonder that he started showing interest in music at a very early stage. In actual
fact, he started taking piano lessons under the tuition of his adorable uncle Mro. Alberto Borg OSA at the age of six. Finding potential in his
nephew, his uncle being at the time Maestro di Cappella, encouraged him to join the St. John's Cathedral Boy's Choir. Ludwig's singing career
actually started from there. Eventually, Mro. Joe Brown gave him the first opportunity to be a soloist musical performer in 'Diana - Queen of
hearts'. This wonderful experience led Ludwig to take up lyric singing more seriously and since then he has never looked back. Obtaining
experience from the best directors (Anthony Bezzina, Alison McKenna, Ray Mangion, Hector Bruno, Johanna Casabene, etc.) in Malta helped him
to become one of the best musical male singers on the island.

GREECE
Sakis Rouvas / Shake it (Nektarios Tirakis / Nikos Terzis)
Sakis Rouvas was born in the island of Corfu. One of his first public performances took place at his graduation ball, where he sung hits by
Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Another aspiration of Sakis at this early age was athletics. His pole-vault performance brought him to the Greek
national team.
His first appearances as a professional singer took place in the club scene of Athens in 1991. Soon afterwards, he signed his first record deal.
His real ‘break’ into the Greek music scene was his participation in the Song Contest of the International Festival of Thessaloniki. During an
eye-catching appearance, he performed the song ‘Par’ta’ (‘Take It’) which won the Best Composition prize for its creator, Nikos Terzis. Nikos
Terzis composed the artist’s first two albums, which provided Sakis with many hits and established him as a successful pop artist. His career
went from strength to strength and he was soon collaborating with some of the most prominent Greek composers and lyrists. High record sales
and impressive live performances confirmed his popularity and ability as an artist. His collaboration with leading female singer Anna Vissi at
Athenian club ‘Chaos’ achieved unprecedented success. By then, Sakis was a frequent winner at music awards ceremonies. In 1997, Sakis accepted
an offer by Walt Disney Pictures to do the voice-over of Quasimodo in the Greek version of Hunchback of Notre Dame.
In December 1998, already having two gold and one platinum album under his belt, Rouvas signed with his current record company, MINOS EMI.
During the presentation of his first album with this new label, his gathered fans caused traffic congestion in one of Athens’ main roads.
Later that year, the artist created controversy with his stylistic choices; he appeared on stage wearing a ‘skirt’, especially designed for
him by popular fashion designer Valentino. His career was at its strongest and several live appearances, albums and awards followed. In the
new Millenium, Sakis became the first Greek artist to shoot a commercial as the face of Pepsi. In 2002, the Greek recording industry held
their first ever music awards ceremony, the Arion Awards, and Sakis won the category of best male pop singer. After an effort to break the
European market with his release of the Morris Albert and Luis Gaste’s classic song ‘Feelings’, Rouvas’ latest offering in Greece was the
album ‘To chrono stamato’ (‘I stop the time’), which spent eight weeks in the official Greek albums’ chart.
The announcement of his participation has raised hopes of a good placing in Greece. Sakis motto about himself is: You have seen nothing yet…
It therefore remains to be seen whether what he means will become clear this May!

SLOVENIA
Platin / Stay forever (Diana Lecnik / Simon Gomilsek)
Diana and Simon met directly on stage, where they were members of a band playing mostly in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. After two Years
working with them the two decided to devote all their time to their own career and not much later PLATIN was born. The two call themselves
“absolutely crazy“ because on their concerts they manage to perform around 600 pop songs, the most known ballades, country songs, the best
hits from the last three decades, rock and Latino songs, jazz standards and the latest hits still playing on the European radio stations and
not to forget about 40 of their own songs. Some of their own were presented on some of the most important Slovenian music festivals, where
they present themselves not only as performers but also as authors of the melody, the text and the arrangement. These songs and a great many
of other songs for different performers are produced at their own music studio. But still they love to perform live on stage as a duet, when
they are guests on some music events, or performing on banquets, openings and other special occasions, or performing with their band, when they
play concerts. In spring 2001 PLATIN released their first album „Crazy night“ for the special needs of a firm (hymn, 9 other songs from PLATIN).
In December 2002 their first official album „Pet minut“ (Five minutes) was released, published at ZKP RTV Slovenia, the most recognized publishing
house in Slovenia. In February 2004 they won at the finals at the slovenian pre-contest for the Eurosong. With ten points from the international
jury and 10 points from the voters, they are carriying the honnor of representing their country at the Eurovision song contest 2004 in Istanbul.
